What is Driver Logs?
The Driver Logs application automates the hours of service forms for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Drivers are now able to enter duty status information directly into the iDT™ Internet Data Terminal. GeoManagerSM allows administrators to check the drivers’ hours of service. Driver Logs complies with the Federal Motor Carrier Regulations, Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 395-Hours of Service of Drivers.
How does Driver Logs help the driver?
A driver enters the status information into the iDT. Driver Logs supplies the time and location, and otherwise fills out the driver log form automatically.
How does Driver Logs help the office?
Driver status is continuously updated, DOT forms are automatically completed, DOT violations are flagged. Your driver logs process can be virtually automated.
DOT Requirements
Which drivers need to comply with the regulations?
The DOT requires motor carrier companies and drivers to comply with hours of service regulations. Drivers that operate a motor carrier and fall within the following categories must complete a driver daily log:
- Operate a vehicle greater than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight
- Travel more than 100 air-mile radius from reporting terminal
- Work more than 12 consecutive hours
- Transport hazardous materials
What are the Hours of Service regulations?
The present hours of service regulations allow drivers to work for 15 hours per day, including 10 hours of driving time. The weekly limits are 60 hours in seven days and 70 hours in eight days.
Does Driver Logs need to be certified by the DOT?
The DOT does not have a certification process for automatic on-board recorders. The DOT stated that as long as Driver Logs complies with the regulations (Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 395-Hours of Service or Drivers) then Driver Logs is in compliance.
What states (jurisdictions) have their own regulations for hours of service and automatic on-board recorders?
The State of California has its own regulations (Title 13 Part 1213).
Are drivers still required to carry the paper logs with them?
Drivers must comply with all current and changing regulations. Please check with your local authorities for current requirements.
Are drivers still required to sign the paper logs generated by Driver Logs?
Drivers must sign each daily driver log sheet.
Are companies required to save the paper driver logs?
Drivers must comply with all current and changing regulations. The regulations as of June 2003 state that drivers must keep the last 30 days of paper logs and the company must keep the last 6 months of paper logs for each driver.
What happens if there is no GPS available at the time of duty status change?
To be in compliance with the regulations, the driver must revert back to completing paper logs. Driver Logs will still allow a driver to enter a duty status change but the duty status change will not have the location.
Can a driver review the duty status changes on the iDT?
A driver may review the duty status changes on the iDT.
Can the driver change a duty status when the vehicle is in motion?
Regulations do not permit a duty status to be entered while driving.
Can a driver add a duty status for time that has already passed?
Yes, a driver is allowed to enter a duty status for time that has already passed but only back to the last recorded duty status.
Are the duty status entries editable on the iDT?
Per the regulations, the duty status changes are not editable through the iDT. The duty status changes are only editable through GeoManager.
Driver Logs Requirements
What hardware is required for Driver Logs in the vehicle?
iLM (1500, 2000i, 2500,2710,2711,2720s, 2730) and iDT (2000, 2500) and Firmware Version 1.6x
What firmware is required for Driver Logs?
Firmware version 1.6x supports Driver Logs.
Firmware versions that can be upgraded via OTAP (wireless upgrade) with 1.6x are:
- 0.96 and later for iLM 2000 (CDPD)
- 1.00 and later for iLM 2500 (CDPD)
- 1.00N and later for iLM 2000i (iDEN)
- 1.52 for iLM 2720 (CDMA)
- 1.52 for iLM 2730 (GPRS)
Is a printer required in the vehicle to print out the daily log?
Per the regulations, the duty status information must be able to display electronically. A printer is not required in the vehicle.
Does a Symbol device support Driver Logs?
Symbol devices do not support Driver Logs in this release.
Does Pocket Edition support Driver Logs?
Pocket Edition does not support driver logs in this release.
What if I already use @Road Messaging with Forms with the iDT?
If you are a current @Road Messaging with Forms customer and have already purchased iDT devices for mobile resources, your account may simply be charged for Driver Logs and stop being charged for Messaging with Forms on the date your new Driver Logs service begins.
Can Driver Logs be purchased without Messaging with Forms?
Driver Logs is bundled with Messaging with Forms for GeoManager and cannot be purchased separately.
Do I need Adobe Acrobat to download the daily log as a PDF file?
Yes, the customer needs to have the Adobe Acrobat program loaded on the computer in order to generate PDF files.

Will Driver Logs automatically switch a driver’s duty status?
The driver must enter each duty status change using the iDT. The dispatcher may add a driver’s duty status change using GeoManager.
How long is the data for Driver Logs stored in GeoManager?
The standard storage length for data is 14 days. Longer data storage is available for an additional fee.
Will Driver Logs send alerts of driving violations to drivers or dispatchers?
The current release will not send drivers or dispatchers alerts of driving violations.
What happens if a duty status is entered when a vehicle is not in wireless coverage?
If a duty status is entered while the vehicle is not in wireless, the iLM will save the duty status change(s) for transmission to the @Road servers when the wireless coverage is available.
How are days of duty status stored on the iLM?
The iLM will save the last 8 days of duty status changes for a driver and a co-driver. Each driver is limited to 48 duty status changes per day.
Can Driver Logs handle multiple driver operation (i.e., driver and co-driver)?
Yes, Driver logs can handle duty status information for multiple driver operation (driver and co-driver).
What location is displayed in the Remarks section of the printed Driver Daily Log sheet?
In the Remarks section of the daily driver log, the city and state are displayed. A landmark name will also be displayed if a landmark is configured for that location.
When a duty status is sent from the iDT, what does the iDT display as the location the duty status was entered?
On the iDT, the location where the duty status was entered is displayed as a latitude and longitude. We display latitude and longitude because it satisfies the regulations of “geographic location code”. We also display the latitude and longitude because it saves airtime fees for the customer.
Does Driver Logs support Canadian hours of service rules?
Driver Logs does not support Canadian hours of service in this release.
If drivers switch vehicles, will the iLM have the last 8 days of duty status changes?
When a driver enters in and sends the first duty status from the vehicle, the @Road servers will send the last 8 days or the missing days of duty status information to that vehicle.
Will any duty status data be lost if the iLM receives an IP reset?
There will be no duty status data lost when an IP is reset for an iLM.
Will any duty status data be lost if the iLM receives a Non-volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM) reset?
All data stored on the iLM will be lost during an NVRAM reset.
Will Driver Logs function with different time zones for different drivers?
Yes, Driver Logs functions with different time zones.
